Gilli Allan was born in Kent, a county in South East England. Growing up she loved writing stories, which were always lavishly embellished with drawings and doodles. Though her parents did not take her writing seriously, they encouraged to be artistic. Allan went to art school and her first career was as a commercial artist. She then worked in advertising, as an illustrator, until she had her son, Tom.
It was then she reassessed her priorities and started to write again. Her first two novels, Just Before Dawn and Desires & Dreams, were accepted and published very quickly. Sadly, her publisher went bust and her books didn't get the marketing push or distribution needed to make a mark.
